Sebastião Osório de Castro Appointed Secretary General of the International Optimist Dinghy Association 

 The International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sebastião Osório de Castro as its new Secretary General, effective January 1st 2026.

Sebastião Osório de Castro brings to the role a strong background in international sailing administration, youth sport development, and organizational leadership. His appointment reflects IODA’s continued commitment to strengthening governance, supporting its global membership, and advancing the Optimist class as the world’s leading pathway into competitive sailing.

In his new role, Sebastião will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Association, coordinate closely with the Executive Committee, National Class Associations, and support the delivery of IODA’s strategic objectives. His focus will include enhancing communication with stakeholders, improving operational efficiency, and reinforcing IODA’s role as a benchmark organization in youth sailing worldwide.

“I am honored to take on the role of Secretary General of IODA,” said Sebastião Osório de Castro. “The Optimist class plays a unique and vital role in introducing young sailors to our sport. I look forward to working with our volunteers, officials, coaches, builders, sailors, and national associations to further strengthen IODA’s global impact and ensure a positive, inclusive, and well-organized environment for all.”

IODA President and the Executive Committee welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence that Sebastião’s experience and dedication will contribute significantly to the Association’s ongoing development and long-term success.

The International Optimist Dinghy Association represents over 120 countries and remains committed to promoting fair play, friendship, and excellence in youth sailing through the Optimist class.
