Day 5 at the 2024 Optimist World Championship

Carbonell challenges Back's lead in calm conditions

The city of Mar del Plata woke up to a curtain of rain on the penultimate day of the Optimist World Championship, organized by the Club Náutico Mar del Plata and the IODA.

The competitors had a couple of hours of postponement on land, the rain stopped but left behind a very light East wind of about 6 knots. In these conditions, a single race could be held, which was impeccably won by the Spaniard Mateo Carbonell, who, sailing through the middle of the course, was the best at reading the pressures and small shifts.

In this way, he climbs from 4th place to 2nd place in the overall classification, accumulating 33 points. The leader is still the Brazilian Arthur Back who achieved a good 7th place and stays ahead with 22 points against.

The previous pursuers, also from Brazil and Spain, did not have a great race and this was taken advantage of by the Greek Ian Paganópulus who finished third and climbed from 5th to 3rd place in the overall classification with 41 points.

Tomorrow will be the last day and winds of 10 to 12 knots from the Southeast are expected. A new scenario, as has been the case each of the 5 days of individual races. All the top contenders have at least one bad race that they are discarding, therefore nothing is assured and only those who make the fewest mistakes will be on the podium.

After tomorrow's two races, the awards ceremony will be held at the Mar del Plata Yacht Club's central court.
