ROYAL NOVA SCOTIA YACHT SQUADRON, Halifax, Canada to host 2026 Optimist North American Championship

The IODA Executive Committee is pleased to announce that Halifax, Canada has been selected to host the 2026 Optimist North American Championship. The championship will take place from May 21 – 28 at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron (RNSYS).

The Optimist North American Championship is the premier Class event for Optimist sailors for North and South America, and includes invitational spots for sailors of Europe, Oceania, Asia and Africa.   Canada successfully hosted the 2017 Optimist North American Championship in Toronto which saw participants from 20 countries, including Australia, Japan, Greece and New Zealand.   IODA is confident that the 2026 event will surpass all expectations.

The Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron (RNSYS) is the oldest yacht club in North America, founded in 1837, and has grown into one of Canada’s premier sailing venues, hosting world-class regattas and championships including the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race, the IFDS World Championships, national one-design regattas, and has served as the club-of-record for Canada’s America’s Cup challenges.   

 

Revealing his passion to host the 2026 Optimist North Americans, Scott Carroll, the Event Chair, confirms Halifax Harbour offers outstanding sailing conditions for Optimist racing, with reliable breeze, varied racecourse options, and an easily managed race area. These natural advantages are complemented by the club’s infrastructure, including ample rigging and launching areas, dedicated coach boat and support facilities, and strong relationships with local marine services and community partners.
