The Optimist World Championships kicked off in Argentina with a strong southerly wind, ideal conditions for this prestigious event, organized by the Club Náutico Mar del Plata and the International Optimist Dinghy Association.

Mar del Plata delivered a classic day of 22-knot southwesterly winds, with big waves, pushing the 255 sailors from 51 countries to their limits.
During the opening three qualifying days, the fleet was divided into three groups. All sailors completed the two scheduled races per day. These were fast-paced, competitive races where neither side of the course had a significant advantage. The sailors' skill in handling the strong winds and capitalizing on wave opportunities proved crucial.

In the yellow fleet, Lucas Vogt from Argentina, and Arthur Back from Brazil traded first and second places, putting them atop the overall standings.

The blue fleet was dominated by American Alexander Montagu in the first race, with Spaniard Mateo Carbonell finishing second. In the second race, Puerto Rican Isabella Calzadilla took the win, with Carbonell again in second.

The red fleet saw Dutch sailor Maurits Melens claim victory in the first race, followed by Uruguayan Máximo Ortiz Bertoletti. The second race was won by British sailor Leo Gosling, with Ortiz finishing second once more.

Currently, Vogt (ARG) is in first place, followed by Back (BRA) in second. Melis (NED) is in third place, while Carbonell (ESP) and Ortiz (URU) are tied for fourth.

The opening days favoured heavier or more athletic sailors. However, with lighter winds forecast for tomorrow, the leaderboard could see some shifts. Mar del Plata's diverse conditions promise an exciting and unpredictable competition until the final day.
