IODA Feedback - Identification on sails

In response to the questions and comments received following publication of the IODA note on “sails identification”, the IODA Technical Committee has studied those questions and comments and consulted World Sailing. This has led to the following feedback:

1.  Do the World Sailing Q&A and the IODA note limit the allowed fonts to Helvetica?
No, they do not. The standard principle “Same or better legibility as Helvetica” remains applicable. They only put restrictions to the use of the digital-8 font/typeface.
2. Is it allowed to modify the font to fit the scaling (height, width, thickness) requirements as stated in the Class Rules?
Yes, as long as the standard principle “same or better legibility as Helvetica” is respected.
3. Is it allowed to modify the font to make measurement area linear?
Yes, as long as the standard principle “same or better legibility as Helvetica” is respected.
4. Will IODA provide a list of acceptable fonts?
No, as choice is extensive. If you are in doubt, whether a specific font is acceptable or not, you can always present it to the IODA Technical Committee for comments.
5. Will the IODA note be revoked or application deadlines be modified?
No
6. Will Class Rules be modified to - delete width and thickness requirements for sails identification? - add minimum thickness requirements instead of a range? - change the distance between rows and adjoining letters/numbers?
No, class rules changes are subject to existing procedures and AGM voting. Members are free to submit class rules change proposals in the run-up to the 2017 AGM.
