Why is Rule 3.5.2.11 Important?

QUESTION:

Why do we have CLASS RULE 3.5.2.11 that states  'A locking device or other arrangement shall be fitted and used to prevent the mast from coming out of its step when the boat is capsized.'?

ANSWER FROM THE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE:

This picture below demonstrates why this rule is in place and why penalty points are given when racing if the mast lock device or arrangement is not in place. If a boat capsizes and the lock is not in place, this is the result of what damage could be caused.
