Sailing Point Easter Regatta 2016 - Three days of racing and 527 sailors
On the weekend of 25 - 27 March 2016, the Sailing Club Pirat Portorož hosted the traditional 24th Easter Regatta for the Optimist Class, this year named after the main sponsor SAILING POINT Easter Regatta. This event is the most important race for Optimists in this part of Europe, and the most popular regatta in Slovenia with 527 young sailors attending from 14 countries.
In the past 24 years, Portorož Easter Regatta has established itself as the most important regatta for the Optimist class in this part of Europe. It also has a reputation for having the largest attendance of any race in Slovenia by young athletes between the ages of 7 to 15 years. This year, there were approximately 527 sailors from fourteen countries including Germany, Austria, Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Turkey. Malta attended for the first time this year, as did Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Moldova and Latvia. Since Easter Regatta is considered as a selection race for the Slovenian national team, it was a tense and confrontational competition for the Slovenian sailors.
In the three days, from Friday to Sunday, the sailors sailed six races. After a traditional “hold on for wind” each day, the bay of Piran filled with hundreds of white Opti sails. The large fleet of young sailors was divided into four groups, each with its own separate start procedure. Altogether over the weekend there were 41, with 24 completed races in three days.
