IODA Version of Sustainability Education Program Topic 2 – Resources & Climate Change is Published

The second topic of the IODA Version of the World Sailing Sustainability Education Program is now published and available here on the IODA Website.

Delivered in partnership with the World Sailing Trust and 11th Hour Racing and developed with The Ocean Race, the programme forms part of World Sailing’s Sustainability Agenda 2030 – sailing’s commitment to global sustainability.

The programme is targeted to 6-12 year olds.  The IODA version includes amazing images by Matias Capizzano of Optimist sailors and racing activity and is co-branded with our Sail Optimist Logo and World Sailing Logo as a result.

Topic 1- Race with World Sailing was published Earth Day - April 22, which introduced different kinds of boats and competitions for young Optimist sailors from the WS Youth Worlds, to the Olympics, to the Americas’ Cup and the Ocean Race.

Topic 2– Resources & Climate Change introduces the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals: Quality Education; Clean Water & Sanitation; Responsible Consumption and Production; Climate Action; Life Below Water; and Life on Land, as they relate to Resources and Climate Change.

It introduces climate change and how it affects the ocean and sailors, as well as the use of resources (like water, energy and purchased products) in a sailing club.

It also outlines how using resources effectively reduce the impact of climate change as well as how the circular economy helps to reduce the impacts of climate change.

And finally, it talks about Greta Thunberg’s sustainable trip to New York City on a sailboat to reduce her carbon footprint to attend the United Nations climate summit.

Dan Reading, Head of Sustainability at World Sailing commented, “The second topic will enable young sailors to understand the impact that climate change has on our sport and planet with fun activities showing how they can reduce their impact to make a positive change locally.”
