The 28th International Garda Optimist Meeting came to an end on April 4th after the two races sailed early in the morning. This year the number of competitors reached 943 (from 29 countries), an unexpected record, the second largest turn out since the the first edition of the meeting. The sailors were accompanied by 160 coaches!

In the Cadetti category (for under 12s) the young sailor Albert Gelpi from Spain was invincible, placing first in four races and second in another race with a discard of just 32 points. Ushov Mikail from Russia finished in 2nd place, with the young Polish sailor Ilski Arthur sharing the podium in 3rd position. In the Junior category, Frederik Rask from Denmark won with a 6 point lead above the German sailor Ingmar Vieregge and the young female sailor from Trieste Carlotta Omari, already one of the top Italian sailors, finishing in 3rd place.

The President of Fraglia Vela Riva, Mauro Stanga said that even though the weather was not what they had all wished for -it rained everyday except one and there were no races on the first day due to lack of wind - the meeting went on well and the outcome was very positive. The race committee managed to hold 6 races in four days, a good performance if we consider the weather, thus allowing the sailors to discard their worst race from their total score. The International Jury members also worked continuously and efficiently throughout all the races.

The FIV representative, Walter Cavallucci, said that the event is a great tribute to Italian sailing, to the Optimist class and to the sailing schools and clubs all over the world. Juhani Soini, IODA European Vice President was also attending the event and was impressed by both the organisation and the enthusiasm of the sailors.
