El Puerto de Santa María, January 2, 2024 - The wind continues to play tricks in the Bay of Cádiz and has left the opening day of the 10th Ciudad de El Puerto Regatta, Excellence Cup Trophy for Optimist, blank. This event, organized by CN Puerto Sherry, marks the first competition of the year until this coming Thursday. The regatta has brought together more than two hundred sailors in El Puerto de Santa María, accompanied by family members and coaches. This first day remains in the intention of the committees and the fleet's eagerness to sail, as they patiently waited in the race area, hopeful for a change in conditions that did not not come.

With some delay from the scheduled time, the first officer of the regatta, Rafael Serrano, gave instructions to head out to sea, raising the regulatory flag on the signal mast at 13:38 hours. After that, with all the boats already in the race area, the prevailing light wind decided to play with direction and intensity, never exceeding 4 knots at any time. In response to the situation, the committee took advantage of the only window that seemed to open to start one of the two groups, in a race that was unsuccessful as it had to be canceled before reaching the first mark This happened at 16:27 hours, and just ten minutes later the postponement flag was raised by the committee, concluding the day.

All participants then returned to land to enjoy the hospitality of the organizers, who welcomed them with servings of macaroni with tomato for everyone in the new club facilities on the asphalt beach of Puerto Sherry. Looking ahead to tomorrow, the second day of races, the organization hopes to start the competitions around noon, although this would require a change in the wind forecast, which predicts a day very similar to today 2nd of January.

The 10th Ciudad de El Puerto Regatta, Optmist Excellence Cup Trophy, is an event organized by Club Náutico Puerto Sherry in collaboration with the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV), the High Council of Sports and the Excellence Cup. It is sponsored by Marina Puerto Santa María (Puerto Sherry), the Junta de Andalucía, and the Diputación de Cádiz, with the support of the Andalusian Sailing Federation (FAV), the City Council of El Puerto de Santa María, the Port Authority of the Bay of Cádiz, ABD Consulting and IT Solutions, and Carex Logistic.
