Meet ‘Oppie” the Otter – The Optimist Class Mascot!

As part of the 50th Anniversary of IODA becoming an International Class originally by the IYRU and now World Sailing, we would like to introduce ‘Oppie’ the Otter!

‘Oppie’ the new mascot for the Optimist Class is being introduced at the Optimist World Championship in Costa Brava, Spain, taking place from June 15th to 25th.

The otter was selected as the mascot for the Optimist Class because otters love the water, are playful, very social, travel in packs, and some are environmentally important in maintaining sea life.  Not only are they extremely cute, they exist in every continent except for Australia, but they have a ‘distant cousin’ - the unique platypus – much like the Aussies!

The description of the otter sounds pretty close to describing an Opti Sailor!  A perfect match!

‘Oppie’ will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary by participating in all kinds of activities at the World Championships. Follow ‘Oppie’ on social media and other media throughout the week and see what he gets up to. Follow #oppietheotter.

You can also follow him on the World Championship APP and microsite, found here.
