Opening Ceremony kicks off the 2024 European Champioship

Sailors from 46 Nations Celebrate the Opening of the 2024 Optimist European Championship in Marina di Carrara

The teams paraded along the seafront in Marina di Carrara, from the Club Nautico to the central square, creating a joyous rainbow of delegation flags from 46 countries around the world.

The opening ceremony was a vibrant celebration of dance and music, featuring a stunning performance by the gymnasts who represented Italy at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships. Adding to the festive atmosphere, an orchestra composed of students from the local high school of music performed the National Anthem and the European Anthem, which was also sung in sign language by primary school children.

"We envisioned a celebration created by the kids for the kids," said Carlandrea Simonelli, President of the Organising Committee, "to share this important sporting event reserved for the youth excellence of international sailing."

"We are the big Optimist family," began Carmen Casco, IODA Europe Vice-President, just before the reading of the Athlete's Oath by reigning European Champion, the Greek Jason Panagopoulos, and Italian sailor Anna Merlo.

With the hoisting of the IODA flag, the 2024 Optimist European Championship was officially declared open.
