USA LYC worthy winners

The XXVII Trofeo Marco Rizzotti, Optimist Team Racing Event, jointly organised by Pleasure Sailing Veneziano and Compagnia della Vela took place from May 10 to 12.

It was won by the team of Lauderdale Yacht Club, consisting of twins Alie and Liza Toppa, Sophia Reineke, Calli Lewis and Mack Fox. The final was sailed against the U.S. Coral Reef Yacht Club, who were very strong in the round robin stage.

The day of the finals started in beautiful sunshine, after the rain of recent days, but the breeze did not arrive until early afternoon, meaning that some of the round robin could not be completed.

Going into the quarter finals the following teams were still in contention; USA Coral Reef Yacht Club, Lauderdale Yacht Club USA, Italy 1, Garda, Italy 2, Slovenija, Lazio and Veneto. All teams sailed well with some surprising and hard won wins.

At the awards ceremony, held in the Camping Marina di Venezia, in addition to prizes to the winners, an award was presented for fair play on the water and ashore to Giampiero Righetti, USA Coral Reef Yacht Club and Serbia Gemax.

The General Manager, Corrado Scrascia, thanked the sponsors, the authorities, the volunteers, the umpire, the race committee, the teams, their families and their coaches, who have made this beautiful and hard-fought edition of the Trofeo Marco Rizzotti.

Day One

Seventeen teams from seven countries began a 136 match round robin today. The lack of wind delayed the start but 38 matches were eventually completed and three teams remain unbeaten - USA Coral Reef Yacht Club, Italia 2 and Slovenia 1.
