NOTICE TO MEMBERS - Personal Flotation Devices

For all IODA Events, please ensure your personal flotation device complies with our Class Rules.

CR 4.2.(a) states that “The helmsman shall wear a personal floatation device to the minimum standard ISO 12402-5 (Level 50) or equivalent. All fastening devices supplied by the manufacturer shall be used in the manner intended. A whistle shall be carried securely attached to the personal flotation device.”

The NOR for an IODA event may stipulate the minimum requirement for a personal flotation device, but this can vary based on where the venue is located and the local laws. If you have any questions regarding the minimum standards at an event, we suggest that you contact the Organizers for clarification and specific information.

This means that it is the responsibility of each sailor, coach and support personnel to ensure that their personal flotation device complies with our Class Rules.

At recent IODA events, several personal floatation devices did not pass inspection because they were missing serial numbers and dates of manufacturing which is mandatory in the ISO standard.
