This is the third time in the past 10 years that Antigua has hosted the Optimist North American Championship. The legendary sailing conditions and the warm hospitality keep drawing IODA back for more.

At the first event in 2015, 21 nations from AHO, ANT, ARG, BER, BIZ, BRA, CAN, CHI, COL. ECU, ISV, IVB, JPN, LCA, MEX, NZL, PER, SIN, SUI, URU, & USA got a taste of the incredible sailing conditions. First overall at the championship was Yi Nian Koh (SIN). Second overall and the 2025 North American Champion was Teddy Nicolosi (ISV) followed by Massimo Contessi (ARG) in third overall.

Second and third from North America were Rocco Falcone (ANT) in 7th overall and Emma Cowles (USA) in 8th overall and top girl at the Championship.

IODA did not have a venue to host the NAMS in 2016 but Antigua came to the rescue and generously put their hand up to host it again. Clearly the word got out how amazing the event was the year before and 144 sailors from 20 nations came back to Antigua for the NAMS in 2016. Due to the increased number of sailors, the event was split into yellow, blue and red fleets for the qualifying and final series.

The overall winner of the 2016 North American Championship was Herman Umpierre (URU). But it was 2nd overall Stephan Baker (USA) that took the title as the 2016 Optimist North American Champion. In the overall results he was followed by Benjamin Fuenzalida (CHI) in third. Fourth overall and second North American was Mia Nicolosi (ISV) who was the top girl at the championship. In 5th overall and 3rd North American was Javier Garcon (USA).

Having two North American Championships under their belt, ANT bid and won the right to host the 2019 Optimist World Championship. They made class history by hosting the largest World Championship with 65 nations in attendance. Antigua delivered a spectacular event for everyone lucky enough to be in attendance.

We look forward to coming back again to Antigua for the 2023 Optimist North American Championship. We encourage our members to register early as you do not want to miss this amazing opportunity to sail in the legendary blue waters and experience the warm hospitality of the people of Antigua.
