IODA Coach’s Clinic Wraps up in Tanzania.

The only IODA Coach’s Clinic to take place in Africa in 2018 wrapped up on June 14th.   It was organized by the Tanzania Optimist Dinghy Association(TODA) and hosted at the Dar es Salaam Yacht Club in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Entry to the clinic was free for all the participants.

The guest IODA Coach for the clinic was Zdzislaw ‘Zizi’ Staniul, coach of 16 Optimist Medal winners at European/World Championships and who was the coach at the IODA Coach’s Clinic that took place in Slovakia in March.

Eight coaches from 4 different countries, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania took part in the clinic. Over the 4-days they covered a variety of topics such as boat preparation, safety on and out of the water, keeping the boat dry when on the water (SAIL/BAIL), plus sail, body and rudder movements.

Daily preparations each day were as follows:

9am – start with classroom briefing and videos

11am – boat preparations and lessons in the classroom

13pm – lunch

14pm – Briefing before going on the water

14:30pm – On the water exercises

17pm – Debriefing

The Coaches who received IODA certificates were:

Shellee Nel – South Africa

Ahmed Hatem – Egypt

Kevin Mwandau - Kenya

Imamu Said, Vedastus Alphonce & Karim Ngahama – Tanzania

All of these coaches have learned many new Optimist Coaching skills from Zizi that they can now take home to help improve the level of Optimist sailing in their country.

Special thanks go to the Dar es Salaam yacht Club for their support in supplying the coach boat and to the sailors from the Optimist Team Tanzania who will be attending the Africans in Mozambique this year. In 4 days, these young sailors learnt a lot of different techniques.

Also, many thanks to Nelly Coelho of the Tanzania Optimist Dinghy Association (TODA) for organizing the clinic on IODA’s behalf.
