Final day at the Optimist European Team Racing Championship

Spain retain title

Saturday 24 August

Today the event was completed after 204 races sailed within 58 flights.

Conditions were better than last year and for the semis and finals there was arround 10 knots.

The event format gave a chance to the best team in the round robin (Delta League) to come back through the round robin from 5th to 9th place. It was SWE, who won all matches today, who advanced from 9th to 5th place.

The Final was between Spain and Slovenia. The teams were closely matched and after 2 races they were tied, one race each. In the third match it was very close until the last 20 meters when Slovenia lost a chance to came back.

Friday 23 August

Yesterday saw a change in fortunes for Poland and last years winners, Spain, looking more like contenders to retain their title.

The teams that go through to the semi final are Spain with 7 wins, Turkey with 5 wins and Slovenia and Russia both with 4 wins.

The standard of the team racing at this Championship is always high and with the morning tactical workshops from Chris Atkins, the standard improves day by day. The final stages of the competition will be hard fought and a challenge for both the sailors and the umpires. Good luck to all.

Thursday 22 August

Another 15 flights were completed again today in 8-15 knots of breeze.

Top 8 teams have qualified for phase two which is on the programme tomorrow - Poland is number one,then Slovenia and Italy, 4 Spain, 5 Turkey, 6 Netherlands, 7 Russia and 8 Germany.

The top 4 teams will qualify for the semifinals.

Wednesday 21 August

Yesterday fifteen teams from Belgium, Spain, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden and Turkey paraded through the streets of Ledro on their way to the opening ceremony. The teams had all qualified through their combined team results at the Optimist Europeans in Hungary.

Today, after a briefing from Chris Atkins, chief umpire for the event, the teams went afloat and completed 15 flights. There was early success for Slovenia and Poland who won all of their races today.
