2023 SAMS Officially Opens

The 2023 Optimist South American Championship has officially opened in Paracas. Peru.  The event is taking place from April 15^th to the 22^nd.

The Opening Ceremonies warmly welcomed 143 sailors plus their coaches and team leaders from 10 counties to the Championship.  Seven nations are from South America (ARG, BRA, CHI, ECU, PER, URU and VEN).  And three are from North American (MEX, PUR and USA).  

Most of the teams arrived early to train and get measured in preparation for 4 days of fleet racing and one day of team racing.

The Championship was officially opened by IODA VP Americas, Sigrid Beckmann.  Here is an excerpt from her welcome message to the sailors…

“With open arms and warm hearts, La Asociación Peruana de Optimist, the 2023 South American Championship Organizers, its volunteers, IODA officials from many parts of the World, and our wonderful host, Team Peru, all welcome you to celebrate Optimist sailing in this beautiful venue, one of the best events in the Optimist calendar!

We cannot all be happier to see you all here!

A phenomenal week of sailing with wonderful sailing conditions awaits ahead thanks to the commitment of dozens of people that have worked tirelessly for many months to make this possible against many odds, new and difficult challenges and so many unknowns! 

So seize the day!  Seize the week here in Paracas!

Sail fast.  Sail safe.  Sail fair…. And Enjoy Peru!  Bienvenidos!"

Blue and yellow fleets are racing in the Qualificatiaon Series for the first two days of the championship before breaking for the 2023 Optimist South American Team Racing Championship. Fleet racing will then commene with the Final series for the last two days of the championship.
