2022 Europeans Officially Opens & Racing Starts

The 2022 Optimist European Championship hosted by the Sonderborg Yacht Club, in Sonderborg, Denmark, from July 30 to August 6 has officially opened with a lively parade of nations and opening ceremonies.

253 sailors from 43 nations paraded along the shoreline from the yacht club venue to the Sonderborg Castle located in the center of town, whereby the VP Europe, Carmen Casco officially opened the championship with the raising of the IODA Flag.

The European Championship is the only IODA Event that the boys and girls compete separately. 142 boys are divided into 3 fleets and the 111 girls are divided into 2 fleets. Two raced were completed on Race Day 1.

Top three all tied in points in the Boys fleet are Iason Panagopoulos, (GRE), Tristen Andreas Ottmann (GER) and Artur Brighenti ( ITA).

In the girls fleet with two first place finishes, Emily Fenech (MLT) is in first, Moeka Iwanami (JPN) is in second and Alicja Dampc (POL) is standing in third.

Racing continues tomorrow for the second day of the qualification series.
