FOIL PROTOTYPE MEASUREMENT (2004)

IODA has arranged for voluntary measurement of prototypes of foils made in accordance with the 2004 Class Rules.
Manufacturers of such foils are asked to e-mail the secretariat if they wish to arrange such measurement.

Note that in CR 3.3.1.4 and 3.4.1.4 it is specified that the manfacturer's name shall be used. This must be the name of the manufacturer not the name of the seller.

OSIS OPTIMISTS

IODA has found that a number of Optimists manufactured by Osis Båtar in Sweden which require correctors do not have this fact noted on the measurement form. Owners are recommended to have their boats re-weighed by an official measurer, to fit any correctors required, and to ensure that the weight of the correctors is stated on the measurement form with the signature of the official measurer.

New measurers appointed in China

Following a measurement training course conducted by Luis Miguel Horta, the Chinese Yachting Association has appointed three new measurers to check production at builders in different parts of that vast country. Each measurer is being issued with special numbered labels to verify measurement. Those importing Chinese-built Optimists AFTER 1 February 2004 are asked to contact the secretariat for details.

MORGAN OPTIMISTS

IODA has found that a number of Optimists manufactured by Morgan Boats d.o.o. which require correctors do not have this fact noted on the measurement form. Owners are recommended to have their boats re-weighed by an official measurer, to fit any correctors required, and to ensure that the weight of the correctors is stated on the measurement form with the signature of the official measurer.

Banned Sail Cloths

Sails made before 1 July 2002.

Certain types of the sailcloth marketed as "Sharkskin" or "Ripstop" are not permitted under the following change to CR 6.1.4:

"The thickness of the body of the sail shall be not less than 0.15mm. Where in the construction of the body of the sail the cloth is of variable thickness, the thinnest parts of the sail as measured by a micrometer with a spindle surface of 6.4 mm (+/- 0.25mm) diameter shall each be at least 9mm x 9mm square, and the thickness of the cloth shall be deemed to be that of the thinnest parts. Sails which are not so constructed shall cease to comply with Class Rules from 1 March 2005 and shall not be permitted for use at IODA events from 1 March 2003."

However any such sails must be first measured before 1 July 2002.
