Newsletter # 7 - September 2011 |
The first half of the year saw the completion of 5 of the 7 IODA Championships scheduled for 2011: the South Americans (earlier in April), the Europeans, the Asians, the North Americans and the European Team Racing Championships. These regattas attracted +700 sailors from all four continents plus Oceania. July was also the month of many National Championships, most of which are featured in our International calendar and many of which are attended by top foreign sailors, giving an opportunity to all sailors of the host country to sail in an 'international' championship.
The African Championship, originally scheduled to be sailed in late June, had to be postponed due to political unrest in Tunisia, but the organisers are now putting all efforts on running a successful event from October 1st to 9th.
With just four months to the beginning of the Worlds and only two to the deadline for presenting bids to host an IODA event, the featured article in this newsletter refers to the bidding process and the AGM. Don't miss it!!
Please write to us if you have any comment or news that could be shared with the rest of the Optimist sailors around the world. Thanks.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING |
|
The Secretariat and the IODA Executive Committee are working hard on making the bidding and voting processes and regulations easier to follow, not only for the candidates, but also for the members, who in the end are the ones responsible for the decisions taken at the AGM. It is with this goal in mind that we've set up a new dedicated page: AGM.php.
The ExCom have approved publication of a summary of the information given in the application forms returned by candidates willing to host a regatta. The information will be available after the deadline of October 31st.
Apart from the bids, on the AGM page you will find:
- Programme and Agenda
- Description of the roles of the attendees at the AGM
- Deadlines
- Description of the process to bid for an IODA event
- Links to relevant documentation
- Online form to apply
- Links and information of the bids to be voted on and confirmed
It is very important that the representatives who will vote on behalf of their national associations have some knowledge of the interests of the Class: of IODA as an International body and of the National Optimist Association (NODA) as the body that regulates the activity in their country. We ask the NODAs to instruct their representatives accordingly so that decisions taken are based on the actual interests and concerns of our members. |

AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIP |
|
The postponement of the championship due to political turmoil posed a thread to the organisation of the regatta and some countries have decided not to participate. However, the organisers wish to welcome all sailors and know that they will enjoy wonderful sailing on the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Members, especially from Africa, are still in time to secure places so please contact the organisers or IODA, if you are interested in this event. |

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS |
July is 'the' month for national regattas in the Northern hemisphere. USA, Poland, UK, Ireland, SUI and many other countries, held what for many, is the most important local event of the year. Some members even use them as part of the qualification trials for the Worlds and Continental Championships.
We've published an article about a few of these regattas with a short report of each and links to their results. Don't miss it!!
If you would like your regatta to be featured on our website, please send us your report with photos and commentaries. The Secretariat will evaluate the possibility of publishing it on the News or Member Pages. |
