Newsletter # 5 - December 2010 |
It is with great expectation that we are waiting for the start of the World Sailing Championship in Malaysia at the end of the year, only a few weeks away from now. According to the entry list we've received from the organisers this year's country attendance might break the record of 2000: there are 56 countries entered, with Sri Lanka and Philippines among the 'first timers'.
In order to make the Championship much more accessible to our members and the sailing world in general, we are offering tracking of the races, and we are launching an IODA-run mini-site of the event. Entries on Facebook and Twitter will continue as usual.
With regards to the Annual General Meeting, we advise country representatives to prepare for it by reading the relevant documentation, as described below.
In relation to the North American Championship, we've been receiving many emails asking for the allocation of entries. Please see below an introduction to this issue and read the linked article to learn about the process of allocation.
Don't miss out, read this newsletter !! :)
And remember that you can send us anything you think might be of interest to the rest of the Optimist family. Our email address is: info@optiworld.org

MINI-SITE |
|
Stay tuned with the activities during the Worlds. Visit our new Worlds MiniSite, run by the IODA Secretariat. This is an event dedicated site that will be updated with photos, videos, results, tracking of the races and news bits. So far, we've posted pieces of news already published in the IODA website but connected to the event. Go now and bookmark the address!! :) |

 |
TRACKING |
260 units have been shipped to Malaysia today and everything have been arranged to ensure that tracking of the races is a reality. A worldwide audience will be able to follow the races live or 'replay' them at a later time. The tracking page will be accessed through the mini-site. Click here to go to the page.

Our home page has a new look! We would like to feature photos of the teams coming to Malaysia. Please send your photos to info@optiworld.org.

SKIPPER QUESTIONNAIRE |
We are asking members to instruct their teams on the need to have the skipper questionnaire completed before they can be considered as officially registered at the Worlds. You can wait and get the forms in Langkawi, or you can download the forms and hand them in once you arrive at the venue. We ask all the sailors and coaches to fill the questionnaire thoroughly as this is the main source for our statistics. |

NEW MEMBERS AND BUILDERS |
| We are glad to announce that Armenia have joined the IODA. IODA agreed a "6 for 5" grant towards the purchase of 12 new Optimist, which will be supplied by Far East at ex-factory cost. Read more about this development project.
With regards to our builders, Asia have a new boatyard in Myanmar: Mynt & Associates.
Welcome both! |

AGM 'HOMEWORK' |
It is advisable that country representatives wishing to attend the AGM get ready for it by reading the relevant documentation. We also recommend that you bring a hard copy of these documents to Langkawi as printing at the venue might be difficult. The programme for the AGM and the many meetings and workshops taking place during the championship can be downloaded here.
The documentation related to the AGM is:
1) The agenda (which was sent to the National Class Association secretary in November) includes the proposals from our members and the Executive Committee to amend the Conditions and the Class Rules (please check that you have the relevant attachments to the agenda);
2) The IODA Handbook, containing the conditions that might be amended, and the articles of association, describing the way the vote is carried out;
3) The Class Rules.
If a member is not sending a country representative or a team leader to attend the AGM, it is advisable that a proxy is nominated. The proxy nomination shall be made by sending a letter or email to the IODA Secretariat indicating what country will hold the proxy and what topics of the AGM they are allowed to vote for on your behalf. Each country representative can hold only one proxy (i.e. each country representative will have a maximum of two votes) |

ENTRY ALLOCATION TO THE NORTH AMERICAN C' SHIPS |
The North Americans are the only events for which the maximum number of entries per country are not established in the corresponding Conditions. The number of spots varies from year to year and are announced after the World and North American championships of the previous year. Follow the link to learn why this happens and how the allocation is calculated. Click here.
