Newsletter # 1 - April 2010

We are pleased to announce the launch of the first edition of Opti-News, the regular newsletter from IODA. Our goal is to establish a new communication channel to keep you, our members, up to date with the latest information regarding our Class, not only concerning policies or class rules, but also about daily news coming from every part of the world. MEASUREMENT COURSE

Dates: June 30 to July 5

The IODA is running a fundamental measurement course at the beginning of the coming IODA Europeans in Poland. We ask our members to send the CV of any interested person who might have the required qualifications, as explained on the website, for an evaluation by our Technical committee. IODA SOUTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Dates: March 26 to April 4

This year's IODA South American Championship was held in Punta del Este, Uruguay. This superb sailing spot welcomed 168 sailors from 18 countries who were treated to excellent weather conditions with temperatures reaching 30 degrees C (quite high for the season). The individual event was won by Ignacio Varisco from ARG while the team racing cup remained in the hands of Peru. In the Nations Cup (parallel team race event for non South American countries) the winners were USA. Click here to see our daily reports.

 

COACH TRAINING COURSE IN SUDAN

Dates: March 2010

A coach course was hosted by the Sudan Sailing Federation following the arrival in December of the 12 Optimists bought by the Federation, with subsidies from the IODA and Optimist builder Far East Shanghai. The course was aimed at ‘basic level’ training to enable more young sailors to enjoy the sport of sailing. Learn more about this and other IODA Development projects here...

 

EASTER REGATTAS

Dates: end of March to beginning of April

As it has been for many years, Easter saw the Optimist family gather in different parts of the world to participate in international regattas. Apart from the South Americans in Uruguay, 1900+ sailors had the chance to attend events in China, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia and New Zealand!!! Big regattas are a great opportunity for sailors to attend truly international events and make new friends. Learn more about these great events...

 

EXPLORING ANTARCTICA

Marina Bandeira from Brazil managed to be the first Opti mom witnessing her daughters sail their boat in Marguerite Bay, in the southernmost tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Marina's husband, Amyr Klink, is a well known Brazilian adventurer and explorer who seems to have instilled his love of nature and adventure in his family.
