Ryan Teo (SIN) Asian Champion

Thursday 29 August

Racing started early today and the race committee did a great job and ran three races in a breeze which ranged from 5 to 20 knots.

Ryan Teo (SIN) sailed consistently and retained first place with a 6 point lead ahead of Bertha Han, first girl and Edward Tan in third place both also from Singapore.

This evening is the closing ceremony where members of the Japanese royal family will be honoured guests. Despite the difficult wind conditions, this was a very successful championship. Congratulations and a big thank you to the organisers for their hard work and to the sailors for making this such a great event.

A further 4 races were run today and the first discard has now been applied.

The first two starts were very difficult with the wind constantly shifting but then it settled with 4-12 knots. This kept the race committee very busy, continually resetting the course.

After 6 races, Singapore and Thailand are dominating the leader board. With the discard now available Ryan Teo (SIN) has been able to exclude his black flag score from race 1 and moves into 1st place. Only three points behind and first girl, is Kamonchanok Klahan (THA).

The final day of racing is tomorrow.

Tuesday 27 August

The Optimist Asian Team Racing Championship saw favourable conditions today, ensuring that the Race Committee could complete all 32 races using the standard Optimist format with a 7 flight grid and 16 teams registered.

Thailand 1 and 2, USA, Korea and Singapore 1 and 2 were all strong from the start, winning their first round matches. In the following flights the top teams all lost one match other than SIN 1 who remained undefeated and from Flight D qualified for the final. This left KOR, SIN 2, THA 1 and USA to fight it out to sail against them. SIN 2 knocked out KOR and then THA 1, strong from the beginning, knocked out USA.

This left the fight for a place in the final between SIN 2 and THA 1. THA 1 put up a good fight but eventually lost out to SIN 2, ensuring a final of SIN 1 vs SIN 2. Thailand 1 had secured third place after some fantastic sailing and first place eventually went to Singapore 2, who sailed brilliantly to defeat Singapore 1 who had until then been undefeated.

Fleet racing will continue tomorrow.

The scheduled time for a warning signal for the first race of the championship was 1100 but the fleet were held ashore due to low wind conditions.

At 14:30 the wind came in from 230 degree with 6-9 knots, the fleets were released but once on the course the wind was not stable enough to start racing and the sailors returned ashore without having been able to start a race.
