Strong winds make for challenging conditions

Gorka Arajol, Andorra

The Gran Premi Principat d′Andorra GrandValira, saw the Optimist fleet divided into three divisions, sailing on one course and all other classes (420, Laser and Europe) on a second one. The sun was shining and temperature was fine, wind forecast was good, progressively increasing from 10 knots in the morning to 24 in the afternoon. Wind conditions were good, less than 20 knots, until mid afternoon when a squall hit the racing area and the optimist fleet came ashore.

Sunday saw a wind forecast stronger than the day before, increasing from 15 to 22 knots. For safety reasons it was decided to concentrate all races on a single racing area, with the different classes competing one after the other. Despite wind in the mid mid 20s, with gusts of 28, all classes were able to race, however the youngest group of Optimist sailors remained ashore.

The many volunteers worked hard to ensure that this was a successful regatta and after the closing ceremony the XXI Gran Premi Principat d'Andorra GrandValira had quite a party!
