Teams Arrive in Myanmar for Asian & Oceania Championship.

Today marks the opening day of the 2018 Optimist Asian and Oceanian Championship, hosted by the Ngwe Saung Yacht Club & Resort with the support of the Myanmar Yachting Federation.

Although for all the teams and officials it was a long bus journey to the venue from Yangon, once here, it is a little slice of paradise.  The venue is stunning, and the organizers have gone out of their way to make sure that every detail has taken care of.

Many of the teams have been arriving over that past few days to get used to the heat and humidity and to recover from jet lag.  The last teams arrived today and have passed through measurement.  Most of the teams went out for an unofficial practice race.  The Race Committee has been training for the past few days and are ready for racing tomorrow.

In total, 129 sailors are participating from 16 different nations – 14 from Asia and Oceania ( AUS, CHN, FIJI, HKG, IND, JPN, KOR, MYA, NZL, OMA, SGP, SRI, THA and TPE), and 2 countries from the Americas (CAN and USA).

Tonight, the teams will participate in the Opening Ceremonies and will proudly represent their country in the ‘parade of nations’ followed by a dinner by the pool and a cultural presentation.
