Membership

We welcome new members Iran and Senegal, increasing our membership to 106 countries (105). It was a pleasure to see new 2007 members Macedonia FYR and Montenegro attending the IODA Worlds in Turkey this year.

Participation

The function of International Classes is to provide international competitive sailing (ISAF Regulation 26.1).

Around 900 sailors from 81 countries sailed in IODA World and Continental Championships.

The IODA African Championship (not held in 2007 due to the multisport All-Africa Games) boosted this number which is subject to entry quotas at each event. Unfortunately, the planned IODA Oceanian Championship had to be cancelled.

  Sailors Countries
Worlds 250 (251) 53 (55)
Europeans 239 (229) 39 (38)
South Americans 190 (194) 16 (18)
North Americans 204 (185) 25 (20)
Asians 73 (83) 14 (15)
Africans 61 (-) 11 (-)
TOTAL 1017 (942) 158 (146)
Many countries enter more than one event but most send different sailors to different events. So less "duplicates"
  ? 100 77 (75)
  ? 900 (850+) 81 (71)

A further 10 - 15 countries participated in "unofficial" regional regattas in areas such as the Balkans, Arabian Gulf and S.E.Asia. Numbers at Easter regattas topped 1,400 and over 1,000 will have participated in regattas during the year-end holidays. Almost 40 "unofficial" regattas were identified as truly "international", meeting the new IODA criterion of a minimum of five nations participating. To identify these regattas the IODA Calendar links where possible to the previous year's results so that parents and coaches can see the likely participation.

New European Team Racing Championship

Team Racing is included within the Worlds and other continental championships but in 2007 the IODA decided that, given the comparatively low travel costs within Europe, it was feasible to initiate a separate European TR championship.

Twelve national teams participated at the first event on Lake Ledro Italy. Entry, charter and accommodation are all free of charge due to generous three-year sponsorship by DIY group Leroy Merlin (www.leroymerlin.com/html/en/home.htm)
