The Optimist year ends with two great regattas in America and Europe.

Thursday December 31

In Miami the Orange Bowl attracted 316 Optimist sailors from 20 countries including a green fleet of 84. The final results confirmed some of the season’s results. The winner was the reigning North American champion Christopher Williford (USA) with the world champion Sinclair Jones of Peru relegated to 4th by his team-mate Javier Arribas and Williford’s twin brother Duncan. Last years winner the much travelled Carlos Robles (ESP) who earlier in the month had taken silver at the Asians was 5th.

This Orange Bowl also showed the healthy state of youth sailing in the USA with a total of 416 sailors competing in the three Laser and two 420 classes, the vast majority of them former Optimist sailors. The International 420 was included for the first time and saw Morgan Kiss (USA) win the gold medal position over Raul Rios (PUR): both were veterans of the 2007 IODA Worlds.

Across the Atlantic San Remo, Italy saw a big turnout for the traditional end of year meeting. Full results are not yet published but it is known that at least seven countries participated and the event was won by Mackley Ross (GBR).
