| North Americans FINAL RESULTS
There was satisfaction for a lot of sailors in these results.
For Sean Lee of Singapore there was the triumph of over-all victory with a magnificent eight 1sts, a 2nd and a 4th in his ten scoring races. With victories already this week in both the boys and girls Laser 4.7 Worlds and the Byte Worlds it has been a great week for the rising Asian stars.
For silver medallist Victor Díaz (VEN) and North American closed champion Iván Aponte (PUR) there were by far the best results ever obtained by Optimist sailors from their countries.
For the sailors of the New Zealand second team (none of their Worlds team were present) there was the satisfaction of justifying the special invitations to three non-American teams agreed by the North American countries last year to strengthen the level of competition (who says Optimist parents are selfish?). They certainly did that with two top-10 places.
Peru retained their firm grip on the team-racing championship, Trinidad showed that the 2005 Worlds silver of Matthew Scott was not an isolated success and Arianna Villena (ECU) showed again the strength of girls sailing in her country.
There was satisfaction too for the organisers. The Ponce Yacht & Fishing Club has never organised an event of this size and complexity (189 sailors from 22 countries) and did a wonderful job. As one member of the International Jury summed it up:
"The kids (myself included) had a ball!"
